I'm going to ride a century this summer (100 miles on a bike). Then, once I can do that, I will bike to chicago (145 miles-- maybe over 2 days).

how many eyes would a 4-dimensional baby (living in a 4-d world) need to learn to see?
(answer: it depends on whether you assume retinas in this universe are 2-d or 3-d)

snow! snow snow snow. christmas was uneventful (the best kind) and we got home without too much stress (at least on my end) and now there's 4 inches of fresh snow on the ground out here and we brought back my parents' cross country skis, an excellent combination. I brought my cat to my parents place and he really enjoyed christmas, he got so worked up running around and pouncing on things that he was panting. but he seems to be happy to be home too. he's pretty much a happy (if bitey) little dude.
I'm thinking about reprioritizing my time and spending less time cooking and more time making art. cooking is a really big time sink, though I do enjoy it, I also want to create more time in my life for art. fingers crossed, I'll be joining the local potters guild when a space opens up... oh, and exercise will happen more in '010 as well, if nothing for the stress management benefits.

my cat is hilarious. we put the cat food in the oven because it's now the one place in the house he can't reach... and he's alternating between scratching at the glass and wailing. heh. serves the little sociopath right.

it was a comedy of errors today.
I woke up, heated up some milk for my coffee, and sparks shot out of the microwave.
then I tried to print a term paper, and the printer broke.
then it was snowing and I biked to class against a 26 MPH headwind.
then my bike lock was frozen shut. and it still is-- an entire bottle of deicer didn't fix it.
anybody know how to deice a bike lock? I'm thinking fire will be the next move.

I accidently ran a subject from somebody else's study today. What can I say... he just showed up...
It's that crunch time in the semester. Somehow a 15-page paper has to emerge from nothingness this weekend. Ooops.
I'm really looking forward to winter break.

My hair is pink again! It's not as great and bright a dye job as I've done before since I used one of those "all in one" dyes, but it's still a nice change. I sort of missed this but at the same time, I also like being taken seriously as a "RL SCINTST" and so on and so forth...I'm not gearing towards a creative career anymore in the same way as I once thought so what was once totally rad is now just another reason to not get that grant, that invitiation to talk, that job interview...
But, I'm going to be a GREAT my little pony tonight, and I'll keep it for a week or so anyway.
PS: I love halloween. There was this cute kid at the farmers market this morning dressed as an astronaut in a fabulous costume she made her self-- I thought it was storebought but clearly instead it was a labor of love. It was great.

Things here are so busy but so worth it-- a lot of the time I feel like there's more to do than humanly possible...but instead of regretting it, I feel more and more satisfied with my decision to apply to school last year. (and to go this year...)
I'm working on a project that is very exciting to me. It has to do with plural agreement and why people make mistakes conjugating verbs after certain types of subjects. We think it has to do with principles of number perception that are both universal across humans and common to other intelligent (counting) animals.
My last boss said no for a rec. letter. It really took a toll on my self-confidence for a few days, but I'm getting over it. I hope that I haven't made an enemy in a high place...
